More than a dress — cultural Identity through textile

post

The film explores the history behind Herero women’s clothing, the evolution of clothing from a former symbol of colonial oppression to its transformation into a symbol of resistance, pride, empowerment and cultural identity in the context of colonial trauma. The film opens up new perspectives through artistic expression to start intersectional, intercontinental conversations to connect people through art, challenge Western-dominated fashion narratives and imagine a decolonized future. Through collaboration with Herero women — via interviews, videos, photographs and dress making — the film shows how Herero women have transformed symbols of oppression into symbols of identity. The Herero dress shows how women in colonial and post-colonial contexts not only survive through textile forms of expression, but also actively assert, remember and reinvent themselves. The dress is also a powerful symbol of female strength and collective memory. In this film, fashion is understood not only as an aesthetic, but also as a social, political and cultural medium. Clothing becomes a bridge between generations, cultures and continents, enabling healing and exchange. The film is an invitation to appreciate the perspectives of Herero women who tell their stories through textiles.
